Main Types of Abstract Art

Abstract Expressionism

The abstracted forms are expressive on the artist’s ideas and emotions. This universality of expression resonates with audiences and artists alike. 


Action Painting

Often refers to works that are created by dripping, pouring, splashing paint directly onto the surface.


Colour Field Painting

Large surfaces with single, flat depth of colour and a feeling that still resonates with the viewer. The effect can be happy or somber.


Cubism

In cubism, objects, peoples, ideas and broken down into cube-like forms that reflect the basic composition or notion that defines them.


Expressionism 

Works are a depiction of the individual artist’s subjective viewpoint, distorting form for emotional or dramatic effect. 


Geometric Abstraction

The use of simple geometric forms or shapes on a flat surface. 


Informalism

Geometric shapes were abandoned for something more informal and intuitive.


Neo-plasticism

Incorporates the idea that parts should be removed that do not belong, leaving only the most basic elements behind. 


Op Art

A painting incorporating optical illusions.
